You can choose if you want to switch on two factor authentication for your account. This adds an extra layer of security to the login process. In this article you will read how to switch on two factor authentication for your account.

What is two factor authentication

Two factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to the process of logging in by requiring access to a second device. After you switch two factor authentication on, you will log into your account with two steps:

  1. You fill in your e-mail address and password (something you know).

  2. You fill in a verification code that you receive on a second device, like your mobile phone or a tablet (something you have).

Imagine, for instance, that someone knows your Karify credentials. He or she will still not able to log in to your account without the verification code. Because, besides the credentials, also access to the device on which you receive the verification code is required. Thus, the verification code forms an extra layer of security.

Switching two factor authentication on

Switch two factor authentication on as follows:

  • Go to My account -> Two-factor authentication.

  • Click on Set up two-factor authentication

Thereafter, you can choose between two ways in which to receive the verification code:

1. Verification code per text message on your mobile phone

  • Fill in your phone number and click on Confirm phone number. This phone number will be linked to your Karify account. Your phone number is only visible to you.

  • A 6-digit verification code will be send to your mobile phone per text message. Fill in this code and click on Verify. This code is valid for 30 minutes. Did you not receive the code? Click here

  • 10 backup-codes will appear on your screen (see below for more information). Copy, download or print these and store them in a safe place.

2. Verification code in an authenticator app

  • If you not yet have an authenticator app, you can download and install one on a device of choice, for instance a phone or a tablet. Go to the App Store or Google Play Store and download one of the following apps: Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy.

  • Open the authenticator app, click on the ‘+’ icon and scan the QR-code with the camera of your device. Are you having trouble to scan the QR-code? Then you can also fill in the code manually.

  • Copy the 6-digit verification code from your authenticator app. Every 30 seconds the app generates new codes. The replaced code remains valid for 30 more seconds; every code is thus valid for a total of 1 minute. Fill in the most recent code and click on Verify.

  • 10 backup-codes will appear on your screen (see below for more information). Copy, download or print these and store them in a safe place.

Backup: reset codes

It could happen that you lose access to the device on which you receive the verification code. In that case you can use one of the backup codes to log in. Every code can only be used once.
N.B.: You lose access to your account when you lose access to your device and the backup code. Store the backup codes therefore on a safe place. You can for instance print the backup codes and keep them in your wallet, or safe them in a document on your computer.

Switching two factor authentication off

Do you not want to make use of two factor authentication anymore? Then you can switch it off as follows:

  • Go to My account -> Two-factor authentication.

  • Click on Disable two-factor authentication.

  • Confirm by clicking once more on Disable two-factor authentication.
